The Macallan, has revealed the latest addition to its Distil Your World series. The fourth release in this series, with accompanying episode “reimagining spaces” celebrates Hong Kong, a city constantly reinventing itself, sculpted by tradition, but headed towards the future.
The Macallan has collaborated with long-standing partner, the acclaimed Roca brothers, owners of El Celler de Can Roca, twice named the World’s Best Restaurant. Together, Euan Kennedy, The Macallan Lead Whisky Maker and the Roca brothers embarked on a sensorial journey to distil the essence of Hong Kong. One that showed it to be a dynamic metropolis, rooted in resilience and evolving tenacity, into an extraordinary single malt whisky and a culinary experience that reflects its unique spirit.
The resulting whisky is a testament to Hong Kong’s complex nature of constant reinvention and fusion of tradition and modernity, and the meticulous craft and creativity that define The Macallan. This naturally dark exceptional whisky features bold, foundational flavours of dried spices, characteristic drawn from selected Sherry seasoned European Oak hogsheads. These casks provide key flavours of ginger, cinnamon and echo other local spices discovered in the vibrant city’s markets, thus reflecting the city’s dynamic nature.
The Distil Your World series documents The Macallan and the Roca brother’s exploration into the many facets of iconic places across the world. Previous editions have explored the metropolis of art, creativity and talent in New York, the embodiment of London’s unique essence and the people that define it and finally to Mexico capturing the city’s most joyful celebrations, the Day of the Dead.
Accompanying this fourth release is the latest Distil Your World film, “Reimagining Spaces.” The film follows Euan and Joan Roca on a sensory journey through Hong Kong, showcasing the city’s blend of ‘east meets west’ and its mix of tradition and modernity. This exploration inspires the creation of an exceptional whisky and a culinary adventure. Their journey unfolds by immersing themselves in the lives of characters who embody the innovation, heritage, artistry, and community spirit that characterise Hong Kong as a dynamic hub of entrepreneurship.
Euan Kennedy, Lead Whisky Maker at The Macallan said, “This is a deeply personal whisky, inspired by my time with Joan Roca exploring Hong Kong. It is big and bold. I wanted to develop the idea of structure in this whisky, reflective of the building environment rising from the sea to the green peaks behind. To create contrast within this whisky, in the same way Hong Kong is a city of contrast. A whisky with many layers, to be returned to again and again to find more stories to tell, its incredible complexity transporting you on a journey of flavour and memory.”
Distil Your World will be available at The Macallan House Singapore from 1st April 2025 at S$6,500.
