This March, local arts organisation SAtheCollective, present Songs for the Crossing, a new sound theatre work that places mental wellness and masculine well-being at the centre of a contemporary ritual of listening, voice, vibration and shared presence.

Staged across two nights only on 20th and 21st March 2026, Songs for the Crossing invites audiences into an immersive theatrical encounter shaped around endurance, rupture, and return, tracing a shift from solitary coping to collective holding.

Progressive Sound Theatre from a homegrown pioneer

Known for its intercultural and interdisciplinary practice, SAtheCollective is a Singapore-based arts organisation that pioneers a progressive approach to Sound Theatre — a form that treats sound not as accompaniment, but as the primary dramaturgy. Through voice, breath, movement, vibration, silence and sonic environments, SAtheCollective creates performances that are not only heard, but felt.

SAtheCollective’s work draws on ancient wisdom and contemporary artistic practice, often engaging themes of cultural relevance within the region while building new forms of audience experience through embodied listening. At its core is a vision to bring people back into relationship — with one another, and with the responsibilities we share across history, ecology and technology.

A work on masculine well-being, told through listening

The organisation’s signature production of the year Songs for the Crossing responds to the pressures of contemporary masculine life where endurance, emotional restraint and self-reliance are often celebrated, while vulnerability, uncertainty and community can be inhibited.

Structured as a nine-rite journey, the work follows “the Soul” moving through destruction, memory and transformation — as solitude shifts toward solidarity. Masculine energy is reframed as relational rather than solitary, held across queer, straight, fluid and non-binary expressions without hierarchy or judgement.

Guiding the crossing is the Kalavinka, a poetic figure audiences do not need to “know” in order to enter the work. The Kalavinka functions as a Boatman — the presence that helps one cross thresholds when they cannot cross alone. As the rites unfold, this guide shifts from an external figure into an inner awakening, and finally into a shared capacity carried by community.

Sound as meaning — a theatre of resonance

Composed as sound theatre, Songs for the Crossing places sound at the centre of meaning. Instead of explaining its message through dialogue alone, the work invites audiences into embodied listening — encountering meaning through sensation, resonance, rhythm, and shared presence.

This is not theatre that tells audiences what to think. It is theatre that invites audiences to listen with the whole body, and to reflect on what it means to be held — without having to perform for it.
